Mal's is on the 3rd floor of a regal old marble building at George's Restaurant on Washington St. It used to be a bank and still has gigantic marble columns which tower overhead on the first level where the tables are spacious and cozy booths are offered too. Take the stairs up to the second story and the diners can be seen tucked into elegant tables with long tablecloths and candles.
To get to Mal's you have to take the elevator to the third floor. Cool.
The Owner Fred, told me it used to be a big storage room. They worked very hard to bring back the beautiful brick walls from under many coats of paint. Now it is a very classy club with tables for 2-8 in front and lots of tall tables in the back. The wrap around mahogany bar with tall chairs is spacious and everything is sparkling new. The historic brick walls in combination with the decorating give you a warm and friendly feeling. Fred also told me that they had to cut the door off one of THREE safes (that were in the original bank) to make a hole in the wall of the kitchen and they had to cut it up into pieces to get it out of the building. Apparently it weighed 2,600 pounds and they couldn't lift it out any other way! They really invested time and money to re-make this old historical building! And the effort has paid off. All three floors were bistling Saturday night and the music was hot! The best of both worlds.
It is a really comfortable place. I liked how the club owner and his associate were there all night keeping an eye on everything and helping whenever needed. They were a big help to me. Nancy Weston met me there to help me with the raffle. Nancy donated a bottle of Dan Ackroyd Vodka "Crystal Head" autographed by him as well. I was dumbstruck! What a generous gesture! It brought a pretty penny! There were 5 items in all and the Howlin' Wolf t-shirt got some of the partiers really excited. It was so nice to see subscribers and to meet a new subscriber who signed up that night.

They have BIG wine glasses and the food was very good. I had a Ceasar Salad with three large pan fried shrimp on top and it was just right! Nancy had baked haddock with tiny roasted potatoes and onions, beautiful.

This is one of the five bartenders who took good care of the customers.

Mal's opened in December 2008 and has hosted many great names in Blues.
Coming up in November Luther"Guitar Junior" Johnson & The Magic Rockers will grace the stage. Click on this link to their schedule.
And a lovely stage it is. Good lighting, good sound system and sound guy handling that for the musicians. Very nice dance floor. They were mombo-ing all over the place!

David Maxwell, Per hanson on drums, Jessie Williams on bass
and Troy Gonyea on guitar.

It was a great night for The Blues Audience to ge out and meet more Blues fans and expose them to the bands and clubs in the newsletter. And a treat for me to go to such a nice club with a very high caliber presentation.
Great place, great food, great music=great time had by ALL!
